CANTINA COMUNIDADE HINDU DE PORTUGAL
Telheiras / 10 €
Bank card, Cash
This place is literally a canteen. However, it’s unlike any other you’ve ever been to. It’s warm and welcoming and full of flavour, the kind of love (and spice) filled food you’d expect to find from your long lost Indian grandma!
Located in Telheiras, the actual canteen is deep inside the pretty huge compound of the Temple. To go in, make your way through the parking lot. I didn’t do that at first and actually found myself in the entrance of a prayer room, complete with live indian music - which isn’t such a bad mistake when you think about it. Anyway, soon I found the right path and made my way into this modest but delightful canteen.
The menu is fixed- you pay the modest amount of 10€ and for that you can eat as much as your want from the buffet, which includes traditional dishes such as kadhhi, yogurt cutty, sha, vegetable curry, bastami rice and roti - yup it’s all vegetarian. Everything here carries a punch so if you like spicy food you’re in for a treat. For drinks you can have either lassi or water. To top everything off, you get tea or coffee and dessert- delicacies such as bundi, monthar or jalebi.
The spot is not very well know yet (and don’t spread it around too much, it’s definitely a hidden gem) but still you can find quite a few people there and even foreigners. The staff is super friendly, with the waiter trying to top us off every time new rotis were made! So give yourself up to the simple (but spicy!) pleasers of Indian cuisine and have a wonderful meal :)
