I am in love. My only regret is not having discovered this place sooner! Carpe Diem arte e pesquisa is, as the name says (art and research), a place created to foster art and creativity. So, let me tell you all about it.

First off, it’s located in an sort-of-renovated 16th century palace on Rua do Século (Pombal palace to be more precise). This gem dates back to before the big earthquake (1755, know your history people!) and was rebuilt after it. It’s got 2 floors and each room is filled with different goodies. On the first floor, you have the reception, the store, a library and the cafeteria. The second floor is used to house a multitude of exhibitions by national and international artists, which are all free to visit (and you should!).

Walk past the cafeteria, and you can reach the back, where the entrance to the basement (the old palace kitchen) as well as the spacious outside area. It’s a huge patio, complete with a sitting area, plenty of vegetation and a gorgeous fountain. Both here and inside, there are regularly concerts at affordable prices. All in all, you’ll get lost in this huge space with so much to see.

So, let’s talk about the cafeteria. It’s a cute space that focuses on snacks. You can get sandwiches, toast (mozzarella and pesto, yum!), wraps and dessert (the chocolate salami is beyond decadent). To complete whole uber-cool experience, the food is served on colorful tiles! It’s pretty much a perfect place to bring a friend for a calm conversation and works as well in the winter (cozy couches!) as it does in the summer (that patio!).

If what you’re looking for is something even more different, I have to recommend “The Invaders” dinners. It’s a foodie experience offered with no fixed regularity (search for them on facebook to get the whole info), for about 30€, that usually is around a theme (the last one was called “the green room”). I have to admit I haven’t tried yet but it’s on my wishlist. Seems like a really special experience, like everything else about this place!
