Bairro Alto / 25 €
Grilled Fillet Steak on the Stone
Bank card, Cash
It’s at the beginning of Norte (North) Street in Bairro Alto but it’s called Sul (South). This dimly lit restaurant has all the atmosphere you’d expect for an intimate affair, its walls covered with traditional Portuguese tiles and its tables with tastefully simple recycled paper placeholders. It’s one of those places where modern and traditional come together.
The menu is concise but comprehensive. There are several options for starters, some emphasising the restaurant’s connection to Portugal, like the 3 Portuguese cheeses plate or the Portuguese smoked pork ham. Others, unveil the influence of different regions, such as the cream of gambas or the sirloin carpaccio.
For the main dish, I recommend trying the steak on the stone and, above all, I recommend going for the fillet. Although they offer cheaper cut, the fillet, sumptuous and rich, brought in from South America, is the kind of meat that is well worth the pricetag (22€). It comes on a wooden plaque, with a hot stone on top, accompanied by 3 small bowls with: salt and spices; garlic sauce; olive oil with onion and parsley.
If you don’t feel like cooking your own meal, you can also get the grilled steak with a choice of sauces (like Mustard or Madeira). As a side dish, there are gratinated potatoes, carrot puré and salads. To finish this experience perfectly, for dessert, there are a variety of options, from ice cream to cheese or chocolate mousse. It will be a decadent night, indeed.
